RE: Not so green cars/trucks/SUV's

Is it fair to compare the MPG and pollution of a 9 passenger Suburban versus a 4 passenger subcompact? Take this example. An 8 passenger Saturn Outlook (or Chevy Traverse) gets 24 MPG highway. With full loads, that is equal to a subcompact getting 48 MPG highway because it can carry twice as many passengers and it would take two compacts. I don't think you see many cars other than some hybrids or diesels getting that kind of milage. When are we going to start taking into consideration the number of passengers a vehicle can carry? Some people will say that SUVs usually only have one passenger. I cannot argue with that. On the other side, what happens when a family of 6 wants to go on vacation?

RE: What is the ONE thing that your next MH will have...?

Brakes that work and a chassis other than a Workhorse. You beat me to it. I was going to say dependable brakes.

RE: Loose dog attacked me and my dog

When I used to ride bicycles a lot I had a tire pump on the down tube. This is about the size of a baton. More than once I had a large dog come after me. I would always stop, grab the pump, and put the bike between me and the dog. It was very unsafe to try to outrun them, some dogs are dumb enough to bite a tire or ankle. We actually had a dog that would get out of the yard and go after other dogs. It was a Chow mix. She would break through the wood fence by hitting it in a full run. Put up an electical wire. Dog would lick the wire to see if it was on. We were very careful, always on a leash, etc. Finally, the dog bit the DW in anger because another dog was around and she could not get to it. We had to put the dog down. It was very sad. Our greatest fear was that the dog would injure another dog or CHILD.

RE: Maybe.. finally a 1/2ton with a diesel

Why a V8 anyway? Why does it always have to be a V8? Because designers don't want the front end of a small truck a mile up in the air. With a V you can get the hood line way down. You can't do that with an I engine.Doesn't the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 have the same front end. Maybe not the suspension but the same hood, grill, etc. Open the hood on a 2500 with a Hemi. Whole lot of empty space in there. And you can slant an engine if clearance is a problem. Remember the old Plymouth slant 6. Great engine. The V6 in our Saturn Outlook is slanted so that the front 3 cylinders are almost straight up.

RE: What is it?

In the Florida Keys you can get stranded on the flats at low tide. Maybe the "fan" is just to get you off of the flats or out of shallow water and then you can revert to the outboard.

RE: Smoky Mountains Tops In Visitor Spending

We went to Gatlinburg this summer. Due to having our pregnant DIL along, who could not take windy roads, we did not spend much time in the park. Gatlinburg is a classic tourist trap and Pigeon Forge is its twin but more spread out. We had fun there but I would drive that far again, we could just go to Ocean City or Atlantic City for a more local tourist trap. I cannot believe they only got $88 out of each tourist, we spent that much on our CG site alone.

RE: Insurance Help/Advice

Check out both GEICO and Progressive, they are not bad. Get a third opinion on the roof. If they say it needs to be replaced, go to arbitration. The process should be outlined in your policy.

RE: Towing 09 Saturn Vue

I have a 09 Vue and have pulled the 2 amp IGN fuse as recommended, but the battery still drains, what else should I do.I learned the trick, we used to tow an 08 Vue. After pulling the fuse, go around the other side and open and shut the driver's door. Now everything should be shut down. It is not in the book. Also make sure you get the correct 2 amp fuse, it is easy to pull the wrong one.

RE: Trouble with Saturn warranty work?

You SHOULD be able to get warranty work done at a lot of places that are NOT Saturn or even GM dealers. The main difference may well be that YOU would need to pay for the work and get re-reimbursement from Saturn (or GM) when they're once again honoring their commitments. Good luck / skipThe problem is that we need to take one car in for a recall and the other for a new key fob, both are dealer/GM only items. The recall is not a safety issue so I can wait. The key fob takes special equipment to program it.

RE: Trouble with Saturn warranty work?

I just got a letter from Saturn and the number you want to call is Customer Assistance at 1-800-553-6000. bumpyI did try to call that number but got caught in the typical automated phone h*ll. If you yell operator at it you will get a person but I did not have the time to wait. I will try again. Thanks

RE: MONITORING GAUGES FOR WORKHORSE CHASSIE

I have the Scangauge on my Workhorse. Gives you more information that you can use. There are two things missing. It will not give you the oil pressure or the transmission fluid temperature. It is not Scangauge's fault, the information is not available on the OBD port. But is is worth the $150 and very easy to install. BTW, I have heard that you can get tranny temps with the 5 speed Alison but not the 6 speed. I cannot verify, I have a 6 speed. You are correct IF you have an older WH that still uses the the older data connector. I believe the newer units since 1996, with the OBDII connector, will give you the trans temp as well as a whole host of info that will let you know everything that is going on with your engine. If you contact ScanGuage at Scangauge II and give them the info about your engine/transmission, they will let you know what you can read with their gauge. Obviously your engine has to have the sensors installed at the factory or the Scangauge II cannot read them. If the Allison 6 speed does not have the temp sensor you cannot read it with the ScanGauge. You will want the XGauge software with the newer ScanGauge II to get the maximum amount of info. Actually I have contacted ScanGauge about the tranny temp. They did not have a working XGauge code for the 6 speed Alison. If anyone has one that works, please post it here.

Trouble with Saturn warranty work?

We have two Saturns, a 2008 and 2009. I tried to contact the dealer (about 40 miles away) and they are out of business. I then tried to call their parent dealer as their web site said. Again, no one would answer the phone. Then went to the Saturn web site that will tell you where to get warranty work done, it said to go to the first dealer that is shut down. I also called a Chevy dealer. They said they are not yet authorized to work on Saturns. So much for everyone saying "Don't worry, your warranty will be good after we shut down".

RE: Boy Scout Trip to DC

As a boy many decades ago, we stayed at Ft. Belvoir. I don't know if that is still an option. Contact the National Capital Area Council, I am sure they would be happy to help you.

RE: using air conditioner to heat rig ...

We use a heat pump/air conditioner. It only works at 40 degrees or above. If it is not built in, it cannot be added. YOu can add heat strips to ceiling AC units, they are about $60. Here is an example. Both are designed to work in moderate temperatures, not freezing. Our thermostat has two settings for heat, gas and electric.

RE: Double Pane Windows

I'm going to be taking some of mine apart to clean and reseal....I haven't done it yet, but I have been inspecting and considering how to do this; I have not seen any metal inserts between the glass. The seal looks like black vinyl. Are you talking about residential windows? Maybe the RV windows are just way cheaper or is there something special about that vinyl seal? There is a type of spacer that looks like a black vinyl. If I remember right it was used for odd shapes and contains the desiccant (the stuff that absorbs the moisture) right in the vinyl.

RE: cat engine 2003 with 1700 miles

I agree with Gonnacall, have everything checked. My MH had about 1200 miles on it brand new. So 1700 is barely more than the delivery mileage. Make sure someone checks for flood damage. There may not be any in the living areas because the MH sits so high. But have them check the chassis with a fine toothed comb.

RE: Paper Maps Versus GPS

I used to fly a private airplane. I could not afford the fancy navigation gadgets so I had to use dead reckoning with paper maps. Do you know how hard it is to fly an airplane, look out for other traffic, time your distance to and from checkpoints, keep an eye on the compass, altimeter.... You get the idea. And having the wife along did not help, she was not trained in dead reckoning. Now they have the GPS in most airplanes. Oh, to be healthy and rich enough to fly again. My point is that modern electronics are another aid. I often drive our MH alone. I don't know if I would try that without the GPS. Nothing like getting stuck on a dead end road with a toad. And it would be very unsafe for me to try to look at a paper map while driving. Our newest GPS is a Garmin Nuvi 465T. It is designed for truckers and RVers. So far it has been very good about not getting us into bad situations. Our previous GPSs would try to route us on dirt roads, etc. When in "truck mode", the 465T will try to route you on preferred truck routes, only deviating when there is no other route.

RE: Double Pane Windows

I used to work in the glass industry. Our shop made insulated units. That was about 18 years ago. Here is a few things I learned. The metal spacer between the two panes contains a chemical that absorbs moisture. It is not just a spacer. Our shop could take just about any shape and make it into an insulated window. All we needed was a template and that could be cardboard. Most of our windows did not use inert gases. Expensive.Using tempered or non-tempered glass did not make much difference. It just added one step to the process, tempering. All tempered glass must have a "bug". An etched mark in a corner to indicate it is tempered.Glass shops do not do the work most of the time, it is done at a processor (like us). The glass shop would add about 70% or more to the price after we delivered it to them. That was some time ago so if anything, the processes have improved. Back then it only took us about 2 or 3 days to make any insulated unit.
